The history of civilization is, in a way, that of engineering: a long and arduous effort to make the forces of nature work for the good of man.
The first men used some engineering principles to get their food, skins and build defense weapons like axes, spearheads, hammers, and so on.
But the development of engineering as such began with the agricultural revolution (8000 BC), when men ceased to be nomads, and lived in a fixed place in order to cultivate their produce and raise edible animals. Over time in this civilization science would appear.
The first engineers were architects, who built walls to protect the cities, and built the first buildings for which they used some engineering skills.
Followed by irrigation specialists, these were responsible for facilitating the irrigation of crops, but as the best areas to harvest were frequently attacked, the military engineers are in charge of defending the crop areas and cities. It emphasizes the importance that communication has had in the development. Thus the populations located along commercial routes from China to Spain progressed more quickly because to these came the knowledge of innovations made elsewhere.
In the last three centuries science and engineering have advanced in great strides, whereas before the eighteenth century its progress was very slow.
The most important fields of engineering appeared as follows: military, civil, mechanical, electrical, chemical, industrial, production and systems, with system engineering being one of the newest fields.
It was the need that made the first engineers. The first discipline of engineering was: military engineering was developed to help meet a basic need for survival. Each period of history has had different social and economic climates, as well as pressures that have greatly influenced both the sense and the progress of science and engineering. It is necessary to remember that during our growth we learn to consider normal perhaps it is but a passing fashion social or economic that represents a point in the time.
